Quick Tip: Take Things Away!

Sometimes going bigger isn't the answer. Today I was working on a track in the studio and it just wasn't working and I wondered what was missing.

But I realized that what was missing in the track was more space! I took out a handful of things that were cluttering the track and it became so much more effective after that!

Next time you're unsure what is missing, try taking things away first.

How do you know what to take away? Listen for clutter. Go through and listen to just the treble, just the mid-range, and just the bass to see if there is something that is out of place or overpowering that needs to go.

A word of caution: either save a version of your current tracks before you start cutting, or duplicate the tracks you'll be cutting from and mute them. You may want to try a few different ways to cut things so you don't want to lose where you started.
